Banking Project
Toynbee Hall Banking Project
This project worked to encourage strategic and systematic change to banks’ account opening procedures by sharing examples of good practice within the sector. To complement this it developed a new resource to build capacity within UK intermediaries to support the unbanked and under-banked (together the ‘marginally banked’) around accessing and using banking services.
The Banking Project was supported by the Special Projects Fund, part of the Department for Work and Pensions' 'now let's talk money' campaign. For more information on 'now let's talk money' please follow this link to its home page.
Banking Project Partnership Group
The Banking Project formed a Partnership Group consisting of representatives from the financial industry and its regulators, DWP, consumer groups and charities. For a full list of members please click here.
The Partnership Group has now launched 'Developing Inclusive Banking' - guidelines offering different strategies for banks wanting to improve access to their basic banking products and services. To find out more about this work please click here.
Banking Project work with intermediaries
The Banking Project worked with a number of partners to produce a training pack for intermediaires working with clients who may struggle to access and make best use of a bank account. This has now been produced as a standalone pack that intermediaries can use themselves. To find out how to order your free copy, or to download the materials in PDF format, please click here.
Other Banking Project output
- To help inform its work, the Banking Project has produced Access to Banking - a survey of UK intermediaires, a short report detailing the experiences of UK intemediaires working with clients who lack access to a bank account.
- With funding from Barclays, the project has helped produce and disseminate a new ID guide, a quick reference guide to the various forms of commonly accepted ID and address verification that can be used to open bank accounts or access benefits, housing or health services.
